David Synan took the reigns of the UNC Pembroke golf program in June of 2005. He joined the Braves after serving as assistant coach for two seasons at his alma mater, High Point University. With two years of valuable coaching experience at the Division I level, Synan looks to be a good fit for a Brave program that made its second national tournament appearance this past season and is losing only two seniors. He is excited to join the UNCP family as a first-year head coach. “I am honored that the University has given me this opportunity,” said Synan. “I look forward to building a golf program at UNCP that is solid both academically and competitively.” Synan is no stranger to Pembroke having graduated from nearby Scotland High School in Laurinburg, NC. After a stellar prep career with the Fighting Scots, he lettered in golf for one season at Georgia Southern University before transferring to High Point. Synan was a key member of HPU’s golf squad for three seasons, having served as the Panthers’ team captain and garnering All-Big South honors. Additionally, he was a three-time Millis Scholar-Athlete, as well as being honored as a member of the Big South Conference’s Presidential Honor Roll and HPU’s Dean’s List. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management in 2003, Synan remained at HPU to complete his Master of Science degree in Sport Studies this past May. Also in 2005, he was inducted into the Phi Epsilon Kappa Professional Fraternity. His coaching and playing experience have left Synan proficient in the structuring of team practices, statistical work, tournament preparation, and travel organization. Added Synan, “I am confident that we’ll be competitive next year. We’ve got six good guys coming back, along with five to six solid freshmen. My first order of business will be setting up our fall tournament schedule.” In addition to his coaching duties, Synan will serve as a lecturer in UNCP’s Health, Physical Education, and Recreation department.
