Funeral Arrangements Set For Ron Miller
PEMBROKE - Funeral arrangements have been announced for UNCP Hall of Famer and former South View and Fayetteville Academy basketball coach Ron Miller, who died Sunday at his home at the age of 68.
Visitation will be held at the South View High School auditorium Thursday from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. The family will receive visitors at the auditorium from 6-9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the South View High School auditorium. Arrangements are being handled by Hamilton-Porter Funeral Home of Hope Mills.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the newly-created Ron Miller Scholarship at the UNC Pembroke foundation. Details on the scholarship have not yet been completed.
A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Miller joined the Pembroke State basketball squad in 1961 after transferring from Edwards Military Institute in Salemburg where he also earned most valuable player honors as a baseball player. Miller earned his degree in Health and Physical Education from PSC in 1963 and went on to become a successful high school coach. He was inducted into the UNCP Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
Over his 35-year career coaching both boys and girls he won more than 625 games, including one the 1993 4A NCHSAA State Championship with South View. As a head coach, athletic director and assistant principal, Miller was a well-known face within the Pembroke community and was active with the UNCP Braves Club.
“We lost an icon," said UNCP athletic director Dan Kenney. “He was still very, very loyal to the University. I think that was the way he was to everything in his life."
