UNCP Golf Volunteers At Humane Society

LUMBERTON – The UNCP men’s and women’s golf teams recently volunteered at the Robeson County Humane Society Friends for Life Animal Shelter in an effort to give back to the community as a part of the NCAA CHAMPS-Life Skills program sponsored by the NCAA and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke’s athletic department.

The two squads took part in cleaning out the animal’s cages, as well as walking the dogs and assisting with ill animals in a special ward. The Braves also took some of the animals out on the humane society’s land giving them the freedom to roam around the property.

The Robeson County Humane Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping cats and dogs. They were founded to find loving homes for adoptable animals, and promote pet ownership throughout the county with an emphasis on spaying and neutering.

The CHAMPS-Life Skills Program was created to support the student-athlete development initiatives of NCAA member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the context of higher education.

In the process of achieving this mission, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program will promote student-athletes' ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities and meet the changing needs of student-athletes.

It also promotes respect for diversity and inclusion among student-athletes and assists student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills. CHAMPS/Life enhances the partnerships between the NCAA, member institutions and their communities for the purpose of education while also fostering an environment that encourages student-athletes to effectively access campus resources.

Its final goal is to encourage the development of character, integrity and leadership skills of the student-athlete.
