Athletes, Coaches Make Cookie Walk Success
PEMBROKE – Student-athletes and coaches, in conjunction with UNCP’s Student Athlete Advisory Council and the Burnt Swamp Baptist Association, have made the latest “Cookie Walk” toy drive a success by donating more than 100 toys to the cause that will distribute gifts to children in the Pembroke/Robeson County community over the Christmas holidays.
UNCP’s faculty and staff were asked to bake a sweet treat (cookies, brownies, etc.) for the event with students bearing donations having the opportunity to sample the treats. As a result, 103 toys in their original packaging were collected for the annual drive held by the Baptist association. The women’s basketball team (25), softball (18), volleyball (13) and football (12) teams all contributed a dozen or more gifts, with seven other teams making contributions as well.
The event continued on a busy season of community service for the UNCP athletic department – one that has seen the Braves collect $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish organization as part of the department’s annual Penny Wars.
