Kenney Elected To NCAA DII Management Council
INDIANAPOLIS – Dan Kenney, who has served
the University of North Carolina at Pembroke as athletic director
since 1998, was among seven members elected in October to serve on
the NCAA Division II Management Council, the organization recently
announced. Kenney will begin service of his four-year term
effective at the conclusion of the 2011 convention in
mid-January.
The NCAA's legislative structure is broken down into cabinets and
committees, consisting of various representatives of its member
schools. These may be broken down further into sub-committees.
Legislation is then passed on to the Management Council, which
oversees all of the cabinets and committees, and also includes
representatives from the schools, such as athletic directors and
faculty advisors. Management Council legislation goes on to the
Board of Directors, which consists of school presidents, for final
approval.
The 19-member committee includes Division II chief executive
officers, faculty athletics representatives, athletic directors,
conference representatives and student-athletes and is one of the
committees responsible for legislation and governance. The
Management Council meets on a quarterly basis.
In addition to Kenney’s election, the Management Council
elected six new members who will begin service at the conclusion of
the 2011 Convention. They are:
• Rick Cole,
vice president of athletics, Dowling, representing the East Coast
Conference (replacing Kathleen Brasfield of Angelo State), chair of
council
• Kris
Dunbar, senior woman administrator, Lake Superior State,
representing the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
(replacing Tim Selgo of Grand Valley State).
• Brent Wren,
faculty athletics representative, Alabama-Huntsville, representing
the Gulf South Conference (replacing Herb Reinhard of Valdosta
State).
• Jared
Mosley, director of athletics, Abilene Christian, representing the
Lone Star Conference (replacing Brasfield).
• Steve
Poston, director of athletics, Wingate, representing the South
Atlantic Conference (replacing David Riggins of Mars Hill).
• Janet
Montgomery, senior woman administrator, West Alabama (replacing
Suzanne Sanregret of Michigan Tech, at large).
The Presidents Council also re-elected Molloy President Drew
Bogner to another one-year term as chair.
Since Kenney returned to UNCP in 1998 to replace the retiring Dr.
Raymond B. Pennington, UNCP student-athletes have earned all-Peach
Belt Conference accolades on 105 occasions, with 11 of those
athletes being named the conference’s freshman of the year.
Nationally, the Braves have been just as well represented, earning
national academic honors 28 times, with another 48 making
all-district or all-region listings.
Off the playing field, the Braves have earned presidential honor
roll honors from the league an astounding 890 times since 1999,
while also capturing four PBC Student-Athlete of the Year
laurels.
During his current tenure, UNCP has also expanded its varsity
athletic program to include three more sports as well. The
women’s soccer team began play in the 2001 season,
women’s golf teed off for the first time during the 2006-07
campaign and football made its return to southeastern North
Carolina on Sept. 1, 2007, for the first time in 56 years when the
Black and Gold traveled to Davidson.
An avid runner and an activist in the Robeson County community,
Kenney is an active member of Kiwanis of Robeson County and Robeson
Road Runners, as well as a former board member of the Communities
In Schools and the Lumberton Chamber of Commerce. He also serves as
a lecturer in UNCP’s HPER department and on the NCAA
Nominating Committee. He was the 2006 recipient of the NACDA
General Sports Turf southeast region athletic director of the year
award.
