No. 8 UNCP Shuts Out Hurricanes To Clinch Series
PEMBROKE – Brad Bridgeman homered twice and drove in five runs, while fellow senior Brantley Hattrich delivered a phenomenal relief outing, to help eighth-ranked UNCP deliver a series-clinching 8-0 victory over visiting Georgia Southwestern on Saturday evening at Sammy Cox Field.
UNCP (10-1, 2-0 PBC) posted 10 hits – its eighth double-digit hitting attack of the season – and wrapped up its 19th series win (21 total two- or three-game series) dating back to the start of the 2011 season. It was the eighth-straight loss for Georgia Southwestern (1-8, 0-2) who dipped to 3-8 all-time against the Braves.
Bridgeman, a Laurel Hill native, homered in consecutive at-bats and booked a career-best five RBI with his 3-for-5 hitting exhibition that also included RBI knocks in the seventh and eighth innings. Eitan Maoz singled, walked and scored three times for the Braves as well. Georgia Southwestern got base hits from four different players, but none of the extra-base variety.
Hattrich (2-0) came on in relief of starter Jordan DeLoatch and turned in a masterpiece of a relief appearance that saw him strike out two batters and yield just two hits over 4-2/3 innings of work in picking up the win. Starter Matt Weaver (0-2) took the loss for Georgia Southwestern after surrendering four earned runs on five hits in six innings from the hill.
Aaron Parnell's two-out RBI single in the first gave UNCP the only run of the game it would need, but Bridgeman took it upon himself to give the Braves a 4-0 lead on round-trippers in the third and sixth innings. Bridgeman also booked a RBI single in the seventh and a RBI groundout in the eighth. Kyle Adair and Josh Haley both plated runs on RBI singles in the later innings as well.
Weather permitting, the Braves and Hurricanes will close out their weekend series on Sunday at Sammy Cox Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
