No. 11 Bearcats Rally Late To Even Series With UNCP

PEMBROKE – UNCP reclaimed a one-run lead on Aaron Parnell's RBI single in the bottom of the third, but 11th-ranked Lander scored the game's final eight runs to even its weekend series with the Braves on a 9-2 win in the front half of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Sammy Cox Field.

The setback marked just the fourth home loss of the season for the Braves (26-13, 12-10 PBC) who dropped their game in the last four series matchups. Lander (27-11, 13-7) moved to within a game of the lead in the PBC East Division with the triumph, while also snapping a three-game league losing streak.

The Braves got 3-for-4 outings from both Parnell and Josh Haley, with four other Braves recording base hits as well. Jeff May drove in four runs on a 2-for-4 outing to pace the Bearcats, who also got a 3-for-4 outing from Ian Harvey.

Newcomer Jordan DeLoatch struck out four and yielded just five hits in five innings from the hill, but took the loss for the Braves after also allowing three walks and four earned runs. Chris Thomas (5-1) struck out seven and scattered six hits and two runs (one earned) across a six-inning appearance to grab the win for the visitors, while Michael White struck out seven in three scoreless innings of relief to book his first save of the campaign.

Parnell gave UNCP 1-0 and 2-1 leads on RBI singles in the first and third innings, respectively, but the Bearcats knotted the score back up on a bases-loaded bean ball in the sixth, and then took the lead for good on Harvey's RBI single to left field a short time later. The Bearcats would eventually tote a 4-2 advantage into the seventh, but rallied for five more insurance runs over the last three frames, including three scores in the ninth, to put the game away.
