Two Rivers Classic Festivities Kicked-Off By Golf Tournament
LUMBERTON – The second installment of the Two Rivers Classic Golf Tournament was held Thursday at Pinecrest Golf Course in Lumberton and a one-hour stoppage of play due to rain did not deter 64 determined golfers from getting in all 18 holes.
A total of 16 teams participated in the tournament, and the winning team of Donnie Beck, Austin Locklear, Larry McNeill and Lonail James Locklear (pictured, L-R) took home top honors after shooting a 15-under par score of 57 using captain's choice best ball rules.
"We're very excited to have the opportunity to host the Two Rivers Classic and all the functions that go with it on our campus in 2010," said UNCP Director of Athletics Dan Kenney. "This golf event is really the first official kick off, and we should have enough golfers to raise a large amount of money for scholarships."
The Sodexho-sponsored event did just that in raising around $5,000 for athletic scholarships. The Two Rivers Classic Golf Event was just the start of the festivities centered around the Sept. 4 football game between the Fayetteville State Broncos and the UNCP Braves. Aside from the football game and golf tournament, there will also be a Punt, Pass and Kick competition for Robeson County youth that is expected to be announced at a later date.
The Braves, ranked as high as #8 in one of the preseason polls, still have spots available for advertising in their 2010 game program. Interested parties should contact Craig Shaffer at (910) 775-4241.
There are still season and individual game tickets available for the 2010 UNCP football home schedule and information on tickets can be found at the UNCP Athletics website – www.uncpbraves.com.
Both teams qualified for last season's NCAA Division II Playoffs and their season-opening contest in 2010 is expected to draw over 7,000 fans. The Two Rivers Classic, won last year by UNCP 41-34 in double overtime, is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start on Sept. 4 at Grace P. Johnson Stadium in Pembroke.
