Charles, Receivers Shine In Sixth Annual Black & Gold Spring Game

PEMBROKE – All-American Luke Charles threw for 113 yards and engineered a 75-yard scoring drive on the first possession of the contest to highlight UNCP's sixth annual Black & Gold Spring Game on Saturday afternoon at Grace P. Johnson Stadium.

The game – a 90-minute, 50-play controlled scrimmage – was littered with special teams situations as the Braves put the lid on its 15-session spring practice season. Charles completed 8-of-12 passes with an interception in booking most of the offensive highlights, while Ben Decelle hauled in five catches for 63 yards as well. Donald Britt scored on a 28-yard touchdown pass minutes into the contest, while Michael Doss kicked a pair of field goals, including a 40- and a 43-yarder late in the game. Eddie Wickline registered a 19-yard field goal as well.

Defensively, Sean Rush registered the game's only interception, while DeVante Bush grabbed a sack to stall a Jonathan Efird-led drive midway through the contest. Efird completed 7-of-8 pass attempts for 48 yards in action under center for the second team offense. L.J. Stroman gave the Braves the best special teams highlight of the day by blocking the extra point attempt following the early score. The block led to Brandon Jimenez scooping up the loose ball and racing 85 yards for a 2-point conversion.

"With the limited number of guys that we had, to be able to get close to 55 live plays, was great. We really have a lot of stuff to look at and work on with our guys. I am pleased. We had 15 really good days and our guys responded well and worked hard the whole time. I thought our guys handled every situation very well today.

"We have six returning wide receivers and a quarterback that threw for almost 3,000 yards, so that has to be something that we play off of and do well with. Our defense has been missing guys throughout the whole course of the spring, so I am pleased with the way they played today. They got some stops and created some turnovers."
