Having already made a name for himself as both a standout
offensive linemen and graduate assistant coach for Virginia Tech,
James Miller begins his fifth year as a collegiate coach and his
third alongside head coach Pete Shinnick at UNCP while serving as
the defensive line coach for the Braves.
Miller has helped produce a feared UNCP defensive line – one
that has helped anchor one of the nation’s best total
defenses the past two seasons (2nd in 2008, 11th in 2009). The
Braves have also been listed among the nation’s elite the
last two years in rushing defense, sacks and tackles for loss.
Miller comes to Pembroke via Blacksburg, Va., where he spent the
2007 and 2008 seasons as a graduate assistant coach for Virginia
Tech. Prior to that, he was a 13-game starter for head coach Frank
Beamer’s 2004 Hokie squad that won the inaugural Atlantic
Coast Conference championship to secure a spot in the Nokia Sugar
Bowl.
As a member of the VT coaching staff, Miller was charged with the
responsibility of assisting in the preparation of the Hokies’
offensive line, as well as the defensive scout team. In addition,
he prepared the computer breakdown of each week’s opponent
and was also responsible for signaling in defensive fronts and
blitzes. During his two-year coaching stint with the Maroon and
Orange, VT posted a 21-6 record and made two consecutive bowl
appearances – the 2006 Peach Bowl and the 2007 Orange
Bowl.
Miller already has one stint in the UNCP athletic department,
serving as an assistant to athletic director Dan Kenney in 2006.
His responsibilities included game management at men’s and
women’s basketball games, as well as assisting with daily
responsibilities. He also has a one year high school coaching stint
mentoring the offensive line at his alma mater during the 2005
season.
As a standout offensive lineman for the Hokies, Miller played in
46 games during his playing career with 21 starts to his credit,
and helped VT to a cumulative 36-16 record, including four bowl
appearances. The Hokies scored 400 or more points during his final
three seasons in Blacksburg, including a school record 460 in
2003.
He was presented with the Paul Torgerson award following his
senior season in 2004 - given to the player that shows commitment
to hard work and great effort every time he takes the field. He was
also presented with Virginia Tech’s most improved award at
the conclusion of spring practice in 2002.
Miller earned his bachelor’s degree in residential property
management from Virginia Tech in 2004 and will graduate from the
institution with his master’s degree in health promotions
this spring.
A standout defensive end at Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) High School, he
was ranked the No. 59 player in Florida by Superprep and listed as
the No. 3 defensive end on The Florida Times-Union’s Super 75
team as a senior.
