UNCP Tied For Seventh After Round One Of State Farm Laker Collegiate
HAMPTON, Ga. – After competing in a one-day, two-round event this past Saturday the UNCP men's golf team had a quick turnaround playing in the 2009 Clayton State/State Farm Laker Collegiate on Monday morning opening the tournament with a team of 291 to finish the day tied for seventh place.
Playing at the par-72, 7,202-yard Crystal Lake Country Club freshman Luke Ovenden shot a one-under-par 71 tying for 18th to pace the Braves' competitors. Fellow newcomer Parker Houston shot an even-par 72, finishing one under on the front nine and one over on the back to sit in a tie for 24th after round one.
Taylor Ferguson shot one-over-par to finish tied for 30th at 73 with Jordan Walor (75) and Jonathan McCurry (78) sitting tied for 51st and tied for 75th, respectively, at the event.
Barry University and Georgia currently sit atop the team leader board as each school combined for a score of 281 on the day. Newberry College (284) is three strokes off the pace in third while Columbus State and Lander University are in a tie for fourth at 288.
Newberry's Daniel Stanley shot an opening round 66 to lead the pack heading into tomorrow. Barry's Chris Carlin (67) finished the round one stroke behind Stanley and sits alone in second with Montevallo's Jon Henderson (68) two strokes out off the lead in third place.
Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow morning with the Braves looking to climb up the team leader board.
