Braves Drop Into Tie For 11th At NCAA Championships
SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Fourth-ranked UNCP was unable to build on its momentum from Tuesday's fast start at the NCAA Division II Championships as the Braves carded 18 bogeys or worse on Wednesday to drop into a tie for 11th heading into the final round of stroke play.
All-American Jordan Walor (-3) registered a below-par round for the second-straight day to stay in contention for the individual national championship. The Wake Forest native turned in a 1-under-par 71, but dropped into a tie for eighth place on the individual leaderboard – just six strokes off the pace set by Central Oklahoma's Josh Creel (-9) who booked a 2-under-par 70 in the second round.
Carson Lanier (+3) tallied a 4-over-par 76 on Wednesday and fell 27 spots into a tie for 41st place, while Scott Lambert (+6) shot a respectable 2-over-par 74 and climbed nine spots into a tie for 63rd alongside teammate Michael Mullmann (78 on Wednesday). Jonathan McCurry (+8) is in a tie for 71st place after carding a 7-over-par 79 in the second round.
The Braves (+8) are 18 strokes off the pace established by Chico State (-10) who combined to register a tournament-best 11-under-par 277 on Wednesday. Despite the disparity, the Black & Gold is just four strokes out of an eighth place tie with 11th-ranked St. Edwards (+4) and 14th-ranked USC Aiken. Following Thursday's final round of stroke play, the top eight teams will advance into Friday's match play quarterfinal round at the event.
UNCP will continue play in the 2012 NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships on Thursday when it returns to the University of Louisville's Cardinal Club. The first of five individual tee times for the Braves is set for 7:30 a.m.
