Soccer’s Sam Miles Named UNCP Student-Athlete Of The Week

PEMBROKE – After playing a key role in leading the UNCP men's soccer team to a pair of road victories, including a crucial 2-1 win over Clayton State on Saturday, freshman Sam Miles has been named this week's UNCP Student-Athlete of the Week, athletic department officials announced Monday.

Miles, a Christchurch, New Zealand, native, scored three goals and added a game-winning assist in pacing the Braves to a perfect week last week. He began the run with the first two goals in a 5-0 win at Barton on Monday, and then added a second half goal and the assist on teammate Michael Davis's game-winning score on Saturday against Clayton State. The win over the Lakers snapped a seven-game series losing streak for the Braves, as well as handed Clayton State its first home loss in two seasons. UNCP had last defeated Clayton State during the 2004 campaign.

The newcomer currently leads the Peach Belt Conference in three different statistical categories including shots (56), points (28) and goals (12), and ranks in a tie for fourth in both assists (4) and game-winning goals (2). Miles also ranks 30th nationally in points per game (2.15). Miles has scored goals against seven different opponents this season, including multi-score games against Queens, Chowan, Brevard and Barton.
