Braves 4x100m Relay Provisionally Qualifies At Johnson C. Smith Invitational
CHARLOTTE – The UNCP men's track and field team clinched a first place finish in the 4x100m relay to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships with a time of 41.11 seconds to highlight the performances of the Braves over the weekend at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational.
The relay team made up of Donta' Allen, Jameel Joyner, Shaquille Ray and Jon Williams ran the best time this season in the event.
Ray notched a seventh place finish in the 100m dash preliminaries with a time of 10.98 seconds to qualify for the finals where he ran a time of 10.88 seconds to cross the finish line in fifth place. Ray also competed in the 200m dash (21.47 seconds) along with Allen (22.51 seconds) for third and 11th place finishes, respectively.
Senior AJ Davis Jr. collected a first place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 45.35m, a sixth place finish in the discus throw with a throw of 39.87m and a 13th place finish in the shot put with a mark of 12.13m. Freshman Eric Upchurch notched a third place finish in the hammer throw (38.24m), a sixth place finish in the shot put (13.25m) and a seventh place finish in the discus throw (39.03m).
Williams and Allen set new personal records in the 400m dash as Williams placed fourth with a time of 48.25 seconds, while Allen posted a time of 51.31 seconds for a 25th place finish.
Sophomores Joyner and Malcom Jones ran season bests in the 100m dash prelims and also competed in the 200m dash.
Sophomore D'Andre Weaver competed in the high jump (1.98m) and long jump (6.31m) for the first time in his career as he grabbed a fourth and sixth place finish, respectively.
Freshman Nick Tamburo competed in the 800m run for the first time this season as he collected a 15th place finish with a time of 2:01.43, while Cedric Wilson ran a time of 2:05.89 for a 21st place finish.
Freshmen Victor Cole and Ali Nunez registered new personal bests in the 1500m run. Cole posted a 19th place finish with a time of 4:29.21, while Nunez finished 23rd with a time of 4:36.89.
The men's track and field team will continue competition next weekend when the Braves compete at the Lenoir-Rhyne-hosted NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships in Hickory on Friday and Saturday.
