Williams, Ray, Ndhlovu Grab Firsts At Southeast Regional Championships
HICKORY – Jon Williams, Shaquille Ray and Pardon Ndhlovu each collected multiple first place honors in the final day of competition at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday to help the UNCP men's track and field team collect third place honors.
Jon Williams registered a new personal best in the 200m dash with a time of 21.75 seconds for a first place finish, while grabbing another first place accolade in the 400m dash with a time of 48.38 seconds.
Shaquille Ray ran a new personal record time of 10.78 seconds in the 100m dash preliminaries to finish first amongst the competition and finished the 100m dash finals with a time of 10.95 seconds to win the race. Ray placed second in the 200m dash with a time of 21.80 seconds, while Donta' Allen finished 10th with a time of 22.69 seconds.
Pardon Ndhlovu grabbed first place honors in the 1500m run with a time of 3:57.05 and in the 800m run with a time of 1:55.66, while freshman Nick Tamburo registered a new personal best time of 2:00.71 for a 10th place finish.
In the relays, the 4x100m relay also crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 41.42 seconds, while the 4x400m relay team totaled second place honors with a new season best time of 3:21.95.
Senior AJ Davis Jr. won the hammer throw (45.12m) on Friday and proceeded to set a new season best in the discus throw with a mark of 41.61m to place second in the event as well as a seventh place finish in the shot put (12.59m). Freshman Eric Upchurch took home a third place finish in the discus (38.58m), a fifth place finish in the hammer throw (37.73m), a six place finish in the shot put (13.02m) and a 13th place finish in the javelin (27.50m) over the weekend.
Devan Cureton competed in the 400m hurdles for the first time in his UNCP career and finished seventh with a time of 1:03.69 seconds. Also in the 400m dash, Jameel Joyner and Allen finished seventh and 12th, respectively.
Freshman Jeremy Judd competed in the 5000m run to cross the finish line with a new personal best time of 16:25.12 for a ninth place finish, while senior Zach Bayless finished 16th overall with a time of 16:37.93 in the event.
Ray notched a fourth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.47m, while D'Andre Weaver set a new personal best in the event with a mark of 6.41m for a sixth place finish. Weaver took home a third place finish in the high jump with a jump of 1.90m on Friday.
The men's track and field team has concluded their season with a select few athletes continuing competition at Duke Twilight on May 6.
