Shaw, Berry Named To NCCSIA All-State Team

GREENSBORO – Postseason honors continued to roll in for a pair of UNCP softball players on Friday afternoon as senior third baseman Jelena Shaw (Hope Mills, N.C.) and freshman shortstop Holly Berry (Seagrove, N.C.) each graced the 12-member 2010 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College Division All-State Softball Team.

Twelve student-athletes, representing five different schools, comprised the distinguished team, while UNCP and Lenoir-Rhyne sent multiple selections to the squad. The announcement marked the second-such honor for Shaw who was also named to the squad following a breakout sophomore season in 2008.

Two weeks removed from securing a first team all-America nod from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), Shaw posted a conference-best .441 (64-for-145) batting average during the regular season, while also posting PBC highs in on-base percentage (.529), runs scored (54), doubles (15) and hit by pitches (11). Of her 64 hits, 26 (41 pct.) went for extra bases and the senior also booked 42 RBI, 17 walks and a 96 percent (22-of-23) success rate on stolen base attempts. A very strong defensive player as well, she committed just five errors 158 total chances (.968) at third base.

Berry, the 2010 PBC Freshman of the Year, ranked second in the league with a .434 (62-for-143) batting average, and had 20 extra-base hits (8 HR), 46 RBI and 26 runs scored to her credit as well. A 46-game starter at shortstop during her initial campaign in Pembroke, Berry compiled a .692 slugging percentage and a .464 on-base percentage, having drawn seven walks and a pair of hit by pitches. She was thrown out just one time in nine (89 pct.) total stolen base attempts.
