Lady Braves Squeeze By Jaguars, 2-1

PEMBROKE
– A two-run bottom of the fifth inning pushed the UNCP softball team past Augusta State by a 2-1 score in the first game of Saturday's Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at LRA Field in Pembroke.

The Lady Braves (18-17, 6-7 PBC) fell behind in the first inning after an RBI-double by Jessica Thornton plated Destiny Echols to give the Jaguars (24-11, 5-4 PBC) a 1-0 lead.

UNCP would rally back in the bottom of the fifth inning behind an RBI-double by senior Courtney Hill that brought around freshman Schanique Barrett from second. Sophomore Holly Berry would then lay down a suicide squeeze bunt in the next at-bat to plate freshman Taylor Cloninger from third to give the Lady Braves a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Junior Jamie Burwell captured the win after throwing three innings of one-hit relief with one strikeout. Sophomore Starr Gilley was given a no decision after working through four innings with one earned run on three hits.

UNCP had eight players record one hit, highlighted by Hill's RBI-double in the fifth inning. Barrett, Cloninger, Berry, Lynn Grantham, Kristin Hobbs, Kellie Van Dyke and Burwell accounted for the other seven of UNCP's base hits.
