UNCP Overcome By Wingate, 4-1

PEMBROKE – The UNCP softball team suffered a 4-1 loss in the first game of the doubleheader at LRA Field to Wingate on Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs grabbed all four runs in the second and third innings.

Freshman Hillard posted UNCP's (2-8) only RBI on her only hit of the game. Holly Berry rounded the bases for UNCP in the fourth inning as she reached first on a single to right center. Three others – Kristen Hobbs, Kellie Van Dyke and Morgan Davis – each collected one hit for the Lady Braves. Wingate (6-3) was led by Brittany Loudermilt with two hits and two RBI, while four others tallied one hit apiece.

Junior Starr Gilley (1-3) pitched a complete game for UNCP as she struck out a trio of batters, allowed four runs (three earned) and six hits. Miranda Paul (4-2) grabbed the win for Wingate as she spent seven innings in the circle. Paul allowed five hits, one earned run and posted two strike outs.

Wingate started the scoring roll as Brittany Barrineau reached first on an error, before moving to second on Loudermilt's bunt single. Barrineau and Loudermilt scored the first two runs in the second inning on an error by the shortstop. The third inning brought Kelsey Maffucci and Betsy Braswell home as they reached first base on a walk and hit by pitch, respectively.

In the bottom of the fourth, Berry was moved to second on Hobb's single up the middle, prior to advancing to third on Hillard's bunt single. Berry scored on the throw to first after the bunt. UNCP left three on base, while Wingate left seven.
