Big First Inning Runs Augusta State Past UNCP In Five Innings

PEMBROKE – Augusta State capitalized on seven runs in the first inning due to six UNCP errors to take the 8-0 shutout victory over the Lady Braves in the opening game of Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon in the first game of the doubleheader at LRA Field.

UNCP (10-14, 0-1 PBC) registered six hits with designated player Jamie Burwell leading the way with two as she went 2-for-2 in the game. Augusta State (16-5, 1-0) notched 10 hits as Jessica Thornton and Renae Kimbell each posted two hits. Five different athletes for Augusta State tallied one RBI.

Starr Gilley (4-7) went the entire five innings and allowed only one earned run which was gathered in the first inning, while the seven other runs were unearned. Emily Headrick (7-2) spent all five innings in the middle for Augusta State as she posted four strikeouts and gave up six hits.

Of the nine batters that reached a base in the first inning, five stepped on first base because of errors and the other four reached on singles. Headrick retired UNCP's first three batters in the first inning and faced only four batters in the next four-consecutive innings. 

Thornton singled up the middle in the fourth inning and moved to third on a stolen base and pass ball before crossing home plate on the single to the right side by Hannah Vaughn to put the eighth run up on the board and end the game in five innings.
