Basketball’s JaToya Kemp Named UNCP Athlete Of The Week

PEMBROKE – After averaging nearly 20 points per contest in paving the way for the UNCP women's basketball team through a brutal week of league games, senior forward JaToya Kemp has been named this week's UNCP Athlete of the Week, athletic department officials announced Tuesday.

Kemp, an Elizabethtown native, averaged 19.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in a trio of starts for the Lady Braves this week. In addition to her team-leading points and rebounds per contest numbers, she also connected on 50 percent (18-of-36) of her shots from the field, with 22 of her 58 points on the week coming via a 22-for-33 clip from the free throw line.

She began the week with a 14-point, nine-rebound effort in a home loss to Lander, and was an integral part of a second half rally by the Lady Braves in a tight 57-55 loss at Columbus State. Against the Cougars, the senior registered a game-high 25 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals in the losing effort. Kemp would close out her week with a 19-point, 8-rebound game in a loss at Georgia Southwestern, including scoring six of UNCP's eight points in the extra period.

Through 15 games of the current campaign, Kemp is averaging team-bests in both points per game (15.2) and rebounds per game (7.2). She has canned nearly 60 percent (67-of-112) of her shots from the field in 2010-11, while registering a 72.4 percent success rate from the free throw line (63-of-87). Currently toting 1,169 career points in the Black and Gold, she needs just 20 more points this season to move into 15th place on UNCP's all-time scoring list.
