Haskins Signs Two Transfers To Recruiting Class
PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke women's basketball coach John Haskins has announced the signing of two Illinois natives, Taylor Gallentine and Haley Magee, to National Letters of intent to continue their athletic and academic careers with the Lady Braves.
Gallentine, a Prophetstown native, is a member of the Highland Community College (Ill.) Cougars under the direction of coach Dean Buckwalter. As a team captain last season, she played in 22 games and averaged a team-leading 15.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game. As a freshman, she averaged 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 30 games played. She attended Prophetstown High School and played under coach Don Robinson, grabbing first team all-conference and first team all-area in her junior and senior seasons while averaging 20.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.
The daughter of Kim Schmitt and Merle Gallentine has four siblings, Maggie, Brady, Allie and Morgan. Taylor was a member of the honor roll following all four years of her prep academic career and she is undecided on a major at UNCP.
"We are excited that Taylor has decided to join our program" Haskins said. "Taylor is an excellent basketball player. She can score both inside and out, can put the ball on the floor and attack the basket and is also a very good passer. She is a very versatile player who will make an immediate contribution to our program."
Magee, a Stockton native, is a teammate of Gallentine at Highland Community College. She earned all-region and all-conference laurels in 2010-11, while also earning a spot on South Suburban all-tournament team, after booking a team-best 16.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in 22 games on the court. A standout at Stockton High School for coach Dennis Young, Magee averaged a double-double with 16.6 points and 12.2 rebounds as a prep senior en route to leading Stockton to the regional and sectional titles, as well as an appearance in the state quarterfinals. She was decorated with first team all-conference, as well as IBCA and Associated Press all-state, laurels at year's end. A three-sport athlete at Stockton, Magee was also a first team all-conference selection in volleyball and track and field.
The daughter of Christie Parker and Steven Magee has an older brother, Tyler, and an older sister, Mallory. She was a member of the honor roll, high honor roll, F.F.A., national honor society, servant leadership, environmental club and the prom committee in high school, while also earning the Joe Finn Memorial Scholarship, Lions Club Scholarship and the Anthony E. Valika Scholarship. She is undecided on a major at UNCP.
"Haley is a hard-nosed player who is an excellent shooter and scorer," Haskins said. "She plays extremely hard and rebounds the ball extremely well. We are happy that Haley has decided to join us and we expect her to make an immediate contribution to our program."
