UNCP Notches Three On NCCSIA All-State Team
SALISBURY – Seniors DeDe Cotten and Domonique Washington, along with freshman Jazmine Kemp earned a spot on the 2012 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) All-State Women's Basketball Team released Monday afternoon by the organization.
Cotten, a Fayetteville native, was the only athlete from UNCP to be named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team for her third-consecutive year. The senior and co-captain of the Lady Braves held the squad's highest 3-point shooting percentage as she was 33.2 percent from the arc. She was third on the team shooting from the charity stripe (72.9 percent), and second on the team in assists (76) and steals (42). She registered her career high 22 points in the matchup with Augusta State, as well as 13 rebounds in the game against Georgia Southwestern. She averaged 9.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.
Washington, a California native, was named to the PBC All-Tournament team after her performance in the conference tournament. As a co-captain, she helped UNCP break records during the season including 12 wins in conference action under head coach John Haskins, as well as a trip to the PBC tournament semifinals. In the semifinals against USC Aiken, the senior collected her third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds to average 9.5 rebounds in the two games. In her final season as a Lady Brave, she averaged 9.6 points and 5.6 rebounds. She led the team in assists with 92 and steals with 71. She registered her career high 20 points in the matchup with Queens, as well as 13 rebounds in the victory over Morris.
Kemp, an Elizabethtown native, was the only Lady Brave to be named PBC Player of the Week during the 2011-12 season. The freshman led the team with a 76.9 shooting percentage from the foul line and was second on the team in field goal shooting (47.9 percent). The forward led the team with 172 rebounds, was third on the team with 50 assists and 23 steals. She registered her career high 18 points in the matchup with Augusta State, as well as 13 rebounds in the victory over Francis Marion. She averaged 8.7 points and led the team with 6.1 rebounds per game.
UNCP was the only school to send three players to the team, while St. Augustine's, Pfeiffer, Catawba, Guilford, Meredith, Wingate and Lenoir-Rhyne added one student-athlete apiece.
The teams consist of student-athletes from North Carolina NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA institutions. Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals. NCCSIA members voted for the all-state teams and teams were selected for men and women in both the college and university (NCAA Division I) divisions.
Founded in 2002, The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
NCSSIA selects all-state teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, softball and baseball.
