UNCP Womens Golf Adds Three for 2010-2011 Season
PEMBROKE – University of North Carolina at Pembroke Head Golf Coach David Synan has announced the addition of three new members to his Lady Braves golf program. Dana Watkins (Clayton, N.C.), Kelly Sumner (Callao, Va.) and Meghan Moore (Durham, N.C.) will all be joining the UNCP program in the fall.
Watkins, a four-year letter winner at Knightdale High School in Knightdale, N.C., shot a two-round score of 158 (77-81) to place 10th at the 2009 4A NCHSAA State Championship during her senior campaign. She took home Team MVP honors in leading the Knights to a second-place finish in the conference and also earned all-conference accolades after finishing second at the conference tournament. Also as a senior, Watkins shot an 85 at the 4A regional to advance to the state tournament. During her junior year, she once again earned Team MVP honors in finishing second in the conference, earning all-conference honors, and leading her team to a second-place finish in the conference. She proved to be no slouch in the classroom, earning academic all-conference honors during both her junior and senior seasons. Outside of competition on the golf course Dana also participated in JOOI Club, was president of the Latin Club, and was a volunteer at Marley's Cat Tales. She plans to major in biology at UNCP.
Coach Synan on Watkins: "Dana has the potential to be a top-three player for us in the fall. With her natural athletic talents, she has limitless potential. I'm very excited about Dana joining the UNCP Golf family."
Sumner comes to UNCP after a stellar prep career for Northumberland High School where she was a member of the school's honor roll all four years. A two-round score of 160 (84-76) placed her 16th at the 2009 Virginia High School State Championship, following an 81 at the Virginia High School Regional and an 80 at the 2009 High School District Tournament, placing her 2nd at the latter. Kelly was a medalist at every match during her senior year except for two, and that consistency earned her the most valuable player award for her team. During her junior season, her squad finished with an undefeated match record, won the district tournament, regional tournament and placed fifth at state. Her father, Dean, was her high school coach and is also a PGA Tour Professional.
Coach Synan on Sumner: "I am pumped that Kelly is joining the Braves this fall. She comes from an athletic-minded family that loves golf. Kelly will be a strong addition to the UNCP Golf family and has the skills to contribute this fall."
Moore, a transfer from Division I East Carolina University, was the #1-ranked junior player in the state of North Carolina during the 2008-2009 season. In 2009, Moore advanced to match play in the North and South Women's Am shooting a 75, winning her first-round match. She also placed fifth at the 2009 Big "I" National Championship with four-round scores of 77-74-82-71. She also won the 2010 Carolinas Young Am with a two-round score of 152 (75-77) and the 2007 Vicki DiSantis Junior Girls Golf Tournament with two-round scores of 73-74. Moore also placed in a tie for ninth place at the 2009 Lady Paladin Invitational, hosted by Furman University, with a two-round score of 153 (78-75).
Coach Synan on Moore: "Meghan will be joining us from ECU and I am really excited about what she can bring to the team. She has a tremendous work ethic and should be able to contribute from day one."
The Lady Braves placed fourth at the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Championships after a stellar regular season and return two all-conference performers from a season ago. Synan received PBC Coach of the Year laurels, freshman Shauna Walor was named PBC Freshman of the Year and junior Katja Dammann was named first team all-PBC.
