Golf's Dammann Named UNCP Athlete Of The Week

PEMBROKE – Having dominated the field of 60 en route to taking top honors at the Newberry Invitational last weekend, as well as leading the Lady Braves to yet another tournament title, senior golfer Katja Dammann has been named this week's UNCP Athlete of the Week, athletic department officials announced Monday.

Dammann, a Schwerin, Germany, native, carded a two-round total of 153 (77/76) that placed her five-over for the tournament and gave her an impressive five-stroke advantage over Newberry's Barbara Castro. It was the second medalist honor for Dammann who took top honors at the UNCP-hosted Battle of the Bayonet on Sept. 7-8, 2009.

A three-year member of the UNCP golf team, Dammann is currently tied with sophomore Meghan Moore with a team-best 76.3 stroke average. Having booked scores in six events during the 2010-11 campaign, Dammann has five top-20 finishes this season, including four inside the top 10. She has twice posted the second-lowest round score in the Peach Belt Conference this season, turning in a tournament-low 71 in the second round of the Pfeiffer Falcon Cup (Sept. 20-21) and in the first round of the Patsy Rendleman Invitational.

Dammann boasts a 78.7 average during her career in the Black and Gold – a tenure that includes 18 top-10 finishes and 11 tournaments in which she finished inside the top 5. A first team all-PBC honoree last season after finishing in a tie for second at the inaugural PBC Women's Golf Championships, Dammann has taken home PBC Golfer of the Week laurels seven times over the last two seasons while also capturing NGCA All-American Scholar Team accolades following the conclusion of both her sophomore and junior campaigns in Pembroke.
