Braves Place Five At SMC Open

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Shiheem Bryant posted a tight 6-5 decision over Clemson's John Porcher in the championship bout to take first place honors in the 174-pound tournament and pace five Braves with top-6 finishes at the Spartanburg Methodist College Open Saturday afternoon.

In addition to Bryant's high honors, redshirt freshman Joey Farnsworth captured second place honors at 125 pounds, Tyrell Walker (184 pounds) and Kenneth Lindsey (197) each grabbed fourth place laurels in their respective tournaments and Jordan Ford concluded the day sixth in the 174-pound bracket.

Following a first round bye, Bryant posted a hard-earned 7-6 decision over UNCP teammate Jake Ferguson in his opening match of the day and got his ticket punched to the finals with a default victory over sixth-ranked Curtis Chenoweth from Newberry. Farnsworth, who toted a pair of top-4 finishes already this year, upended Spartanburg Methodist's Luke Campbell in the 125-pound semifinals, but was forced to settle with a runner-up finish after being pinned by former Anderson all-American C.J. Hamilton in the title match.

Walker fell to Newberry's Brian Newman in his opening match of the day, but rebounded with a 16-6 major decision over Anderson's Bryan Glare in his consolation opener before falling to Newberry's Dave Newman in the third place match. Lindsey pinned Spartanburg Methodist's Donnee Grace in his opener, but fell 8-3 to Newberry's Joey Grisko before settling for fourth place honors.

Ford registered a 7-6 decision over Newberry's T.J. Cayruth and a 10-1 major decision over teammate Timmy Dunn before being sent to the consolation bracket with a loss in the semifinal bout with Porcher. A loss to Newberry's Braden Carter in the wrestleback semifinals would end Ford's action on the day.
