Braves Hold Steady At No. 3 In Super Region I Poll

PEMBROKE – Having put the caps on the regular season with a 13-5 record in dual meets, the UNCP wrestling team maintained its stranglehold on the No. 3 position in the final regular season NCAA Super Region I poll released on Monday morning by the region's coaches.

In  addition to the lofty team ranking, seven Braves continue to be listed in the individual weight ratings, including a pair of top-ranked individuals. Russell Weakley hung on to the top spot at 125 pounds, as did Mike Williams in the listing at 165 pounds. Shane Nolan is ranked second in the 197-pound rankings, while Brendon Parker-Risk (149 pounds) and Tyquan Easton (141) are listed third in their respective weight classes.

Timdarius Thurston continued his ascension in the polls after making his debut in them two weeks ago, jumping two spots to No. 4 in the 133-pound ranking. Shiheem Bryant maintained his position at No. 5 in the 184-pound rankings for the fifth-straight poll.

UNCP will return to action this weekend when the Braves head to the campus of Gannon University in Erie, Pa., for the 2011 NCAA Super Region I Tournament. The opening sessions of the event are set to get underway in The Hammermill Center on Friday at 5 p.m. and continue into Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
