No. 17 UNCP Splits On Day One Of Super Region I Duals
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – UNCP rebounded from a tough loss to Shippensburg in its weekend opener with a convincing victory over Seton Hill in the nightcap to help the Braves book a 1-1 record after day one of the Super Region I Duals inside Pitt-Johnstown's Sports Center on Friday evening.
The split marked the first action of the new year for the Braves (3-3) who last saw action on December 30 at the Citrus Invitational in southeast Florida. Shippensburg (6-6) improved to 7-1 all-time against the Black & Gold with its victory, while Seton Hill (8-8) lost for the third time in as many meetings with UNCP.
Shippensburg used a forfeit victory at 125 pounds, as well as a decision at 133 pounds, to quickly take a 9-0 lead on the team scoreboard, but the Braves used Daniel Ownbey's 4-2 victory at 141 pounds, as well as a 15-4 major decision from fellow newcomer Kristoff Thomas (149 pounds), to cut their deficit back to 9-7. The Raiders would put the match out of reach by winning the next three bouts, however, including a pin at 157 pounds and a major decision in the 165-pound tussle.
Seton Hill needed just a Stephen Smith decision to take a 9-0 lead on the Braves in the nightcap, but UNCP responded with five-straight victories to give itself plenty of breathing room. Ownbey and junior Mike Williams each keyed the 21-point swing with pins at 141 and 174 pounds, respectively.
UNCP will open up day two action at the Super Region I Duals on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it locks horns with 14th-ranked West Liberty. The Braves will close out their stay in Johnstown at 3 p.m. against 10th-ranked and host Pitt-Johnstown.
