No. 17 Braves Rout No. 14 West Liberty, Fall To No. 10 Pitt-Johnstown
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – No. 17 UNCP was firing on all cylinders en route to a 33-12 throttling of No. 14 West Liberty in its Saturday opener, but fell to host- and 10th-ranked Pitt-Johnstown, 28-11, on the second and final day of the Super Region I Duals inside UPJ's Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
The win gave the Braves (4-4) their third-straight victory over the Hilltoppers (10-3), while Pitt-Johnstown improved to 12-1 all-time against the Braves.
Pitt-Johnstown got a forfeit win at 125 pounds, as well as a 10-3 decision from third-ranked Ryan Link in the 133-pound bout, but newcomer Daniel Ownbey registered a 20-4 technical fall at 141 pounds to get the Black & Gold on the board. The Mountain Cats extended their advantage out to 16-5 on the team scoreboard with wins at both 149 and 157 pounds, before third-ranked Mike Williams broke up the monotony with an 8-1 decision over Myers Miller. However, Pitt-Johnstown would close out the day by winning three of the final four individual matches.
West Liberty used a forfeit at 125 pounds to get on the board first, but UNCP responded with five straight victories, including a trio of pins and one forfeit, to take a commanding 27-6 lead on the team scoreboard with four matches left. Matt Littleton ended the run with a 6-3 win over Ridge White in the 174-pound bout, but Shiheem Bryant (184 pounds) and eighth-ranked Shane Nolan posted wins by decision in the next two matches to ice the victory.
UNCP will be back in action again on Wednesday when the Braves entertain local rival St. Andrews (3-4) in a 7 p.m. dual meet inside the English E. Jones Center. Admission is free.
