No. 17 Braves Make Short Work Of Visiting St. Andrews
PEMBROKE – UNCP conceded the opening match of the night to dig itself an early deficit, but the 17th-ranked Braves left little doubt the remainder of the night by tallying 34 takedowns and four near falls in a 35-6 rout of visiting St. Andrews on Wednesday evening in the English E. Jones Center.
The result gave UNCP (5-4) its third victory in the last four dual meets, and also kept the Black & Gold perfect in six meetings all-time with the Knights (3-6). St. Andrews captured its sixth individual victory in the all-time series, but has now been outscored 260-28 over the course of the six-match series.
St. Andrews grabbed the early lead on a UNCP forfeit at 125 pounds, but the Braves needed just two matches to take its first lead of the night on the shoulders of an 18-5 major decision by Adonis Wright at 133 pounds, as well as a 10-6 decision by Daniel Ownbey in the 133-pound bout. The Black & Gold would continue the onslaught, however, by capturing bonus-point victories in the next three bouts, including an 11-2 major decision by both Kristoff Thomas at 149 pounds and Brendon Parker-Risk at 157 pounds, as well as a first-period pin (1:30) by all-American Mike Williams in the 165-pound matchup.
Jake Ferguson used a late escape to register a 7-6 decision over Steffan Baker in the 174-pound bout and Shiheem Bryant followed with a 16-7 major decision at 184 pounds. Shane Nolan and Chris Giddens would close out the night on a high note with a 17-4 major decision at 197 pounds and a 7-4 decision in the heavyweight match, respectively.
The Braves will be back in action again on Saturday when they head to Boone to take part in the Appalachian State Open. Wrestling action is set to begin at 9 a.m. inside ASU's Varsity Gym.
