Braves 5th In Latest Basford Division II Region Rankings
OMAHA, Neb. – On the strength of solid competition in the month of January, the UNCP wrestling team climbed one spot to fifth in the latest Basford NCAA Super Region I rankings, while eight individuals are listed in the top-8 of their respective weight classes.
Newberry continues its reign at the top of the region listing, while Pitt-Johnstown, Mercyhurst and West Liberty round out the top five. The Braves are followed by Gannon in the No. 6 spot, while Seton Hill, East Stroudsburg, American International and Kutztown complete the top 10.
With the exception of both the 125- and 174-pound weight class, the Black & Gold is represented extremely well in the individual weight classes. All-American Mike Williams holds the top spot in the 165-pound division, while Shane Nolan is ranked second at 197 pounds. Brendon Parker-Risk is third in the 157-pound listing, while Daniel Ownbey, Kristoff Thomas and James De La Riva hold down the No. 6 spot in the 141-, 149- and heavyweight rankings, respectively. Shiheem Bryant is seventh in the 174-pound division, while Adonis Wright checked in at No. 8 in the 133-pound weight class.
The Braves will be back in action again on Saturday when they head to Boone to take part in the Appalachian State Open. Wrestling action is set to begin at 9 a.m. inside ASU's Varsity Gym.
