UNCP To Host NCAA Super Region I Wrestling Tournament This Weekend

PEMBROKE – Six nationally-ranked teams and 130 of the east region's top wrestlers will converge on Pembroke this weekend as UNC Pembroke gets set to host the NCAA Super Region I Wrestling Tournament inside the English E. Jones Center.

The 13-team event will get underway on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. with the first of three sessions, with Saturday's second and third sessions set for 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. start times, respectively. Ticket prices are $8 per session for adults and $5 per session for children 18 years of age and younger. There will be no all-tournament passes available for purchase.

The tournament will feature 28 nationally-ranked individuals, including four in the 141-pound tournament alone. Second-ranked Newberry totes nationally-ranked individuals in every weight class, while tournament-host UNCP boasts the third-ranked wrestler in the 165-pound division in two-time all-American Mike Williams, as well as the nation's eighth-ranked wrestler at 197 pounds in Shane Nolan.

The top four place finishers in each weight class will advance through to the NCAA Division II National Championships, March 9-10, at Massari Arena in Pueblo, Colo. Three other schools – Central Oklahoma, St. Cloud State and Fort Hays State – will host regional qualifying tournaments this weekend as well.
