Lady Braves, Braves Continue On The Road In PBC Tilt

PEMBROKE – After a week to regroup since the last Peach Belt Conference battle, the UNCP soccer squads will travel to Montevallo, Ala, on Saturday to match up with Montevallo in a conference doubleheader at Varsity Field with the women's game starting at 2 p.m. and the men's game following the conclusion of the women's game.

The UNCP Lady Braves (8-4-2, 3-4-1 PBC) went 0-1-1 last week with a 1-0 loss to Georgia College on Wednesday before finishing with a 0-0 tie at Clayton State on Saturday. The scoreless tie at Clayton State was the third-consecutive game that UNCP had been held scoreless despite at the time being ranked No. 12 in the country with an average of 2.83 goals scored per game.

Sophomore goalkeeper Britney Bennett recorded a .950 saves percentage during the week, while spending the full 200 minutes in goal. She posted 19 saves and a 0.45 goals against average on the week, and the scoreless tie at Clayton State served as her 16th career shutout and her fifth of the season.

Junior Andrea Collèn continues to lead the team in goals (seven), assists (five) and points (19), and those figures place her tied for sixth, tied for fourth and tied for third in the league, respectively.

Montevallo (5-10-0, 2-5-0 PBC) will enter the matchup having lost seven out of its last 10 matchups, but is 3-3 over its last six games.

Christine Prince leads the Falcons with six goals and 13 points on the season, while Aimee Godfree and Taylor Kerr are tied for second on the squad with seven points apiece.

Alyssa Maxwell currently holds a 2.20 goals against average between the pipes over 408 minutes, and she also has a .615 saves percentage and 10 goals allowed on the season.

The Lady Braves are 3-0-0 all-time against Montevallo, with two wins coming last season. The Lady Braves took a 1-0 victory during the regular season and a 2-0 win during the first round of the PBC Tournament.

The Braves (9-3-1, 2-2-1 PBC) recorded an outstanding victory on Saturday in a 2-1 win over PBC-favorite Clayton State. A physical second half that challenged UNCP to be more aggressive on offense which benefitted the squad as defender Michael Davis headed the ball into the back of the goal to deliver the victory over the Lakers.

Newcomer Sam Miles notched PBC Offensive Player of the Week while sophomore Ryan Hanson garnered PBC Goalkeeper of the Week due to their performances which helped the team go 2-0 last week.  Miles leads the conference with 12 goals, 28 points and 56 shots, and is second in the league with four assists. Hanson also sits atop the conference in goals allowed with nine and is second with a 0.93 goals against average.

Montevallo (9-3-3, 4-1-1) entered onto the winning side of things after taking a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Young Harris on Tuesday. Last week, the Falcons went 0-1-1 on the road with a 0-0 tie at Lincoln Memorial and a 0-2 loss at Francis Marion.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway leads the league with a 0.74 goals-against average and is second in the conference with 11 goals allowed. Junior Shane Howard holds a team-best seven goals while Phil Jackson has five assists.

UNCP and Montevallo will meet for the third time on Saturday in a 1-1-0 series between the two schools. The Braves won the first game of the series in 2009 until the Falcons posted the victory last season. In 2010, UNCP played 45 minutes of near-flawless soccer in battling sixth-ranked Montevallo to a scoreless deadlock at the intermission, but the visiting Falcons got two goals the second period to post a 2-0 win over the Braves at Varsity Grounds.
