Lady Braves Defeat Chowan 6-3
PEMBROKE – UNCP booked two wins in doubles play and then captured four straight-set singles victories en route to a 6-3 rout of Chowan on Sunday afternoon at UNCP's Varsity Tennis Courts.
Visiting Chowan's (13-15) Inesa Asatryan and Natalie Kamenshchikova came out with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles, but UNCP (13-12) won the next two doubles matches to send the Lady Braves into singles competition leading 2-1. Leigh-Anne McAfee and Shelby Bickel defeated Jennifer Humphrey and Heaven Rushing 8-0 on court No. 2, while Madeline DiNunzio and Monica Espitia ousted Brittney Moser and Jena'y Nelson 8-0 in No. 3 doubles.
The Lady Braves captured four straight-set victories in singles play including Bickel's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over Rushing. DiNunzio surrendered just one game in posting a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, while Espitia toppled Nelson 6-0, 6-0 on court No. 6. Herlocker upended Humphery 6-0, 6-0 in No. 3 singles before McAfee split sets one and two 6-1, 6-0 and then lost the superset 10-4 at No. 2 singles. Winterbottom lost in the featured match on court No. 1 to Kamenshchikova 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
The Lady Braves will wrap up their season on Wednesday afternoon against Pfeiffer (9-11) at UNCP Varsity Tennis Courts. Match time is slated for 2:30 p.m.
