McAfee Grabs Second Place At GCSU Fall Championships
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Leigh-Anne McAfee earned second place in the "A" singles flight as the UNC Pembroke tennis team wrapped up competition at the Georgia College and State University Fall Tennis Championship on Satuday afternoon at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility.
After a first-round bye and a win in the quarterfinals yesterday, McAfee faced Ivana Marevic of host-school, Georgia College. McAfee pulled out the three-set victory, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 to make to the final round against Macy Polk, who put away UNCP's Shelby Bickel to advance to the final. Bickel fell to her Georgia College opponent in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-0. McAfee took just three games in the final round, as Polk clinched the victory, 6-2, 6-1.
Hannah Herlocker and Monica Espitia moved into the "B" singles consolation bracket after falling to tough Peach Belt Conference opponents on Friday. Herlocker was bested by Morgan Winston in two sets of 6-4, while Espitia fell to Tiffany Vanhpraseuth in close match of 7-5, 7-5.
In the "C" singles flight, Madeline DiNunzio played her first match of the tournament after receiving a bye in the first round on Friday. DiNunzio matched up with Alyssa Savill from Lander, who claimed the three-set match from DiNunzio, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Following the loss, DiNunzio joined Morgan Sheehan in the consolation round for the "C' singles flight. Sheehan defeated Sarah Murray in the first match, 0-6, 7-6, 6-0, while DiNunzio was also successful in the consolation round, beating Sarah Martin, 7-6, 6-2.
Doubles action saw the tandem of Bickel and Herlocker pick up their second win of the weekend after pulling out a 9-8 triumph over Georgia College's team of Marevic and Hannah Serdinia. McAfee and Espitia were beat by Wingate's Caroline Holland and Layla Tank, 8-0 in doubles compeition.
UNCP will wrap up its 2013 fall schedule when they play in the Methodist Invitational in Fayetteville in October.
