Mahaffie, Metzinger Set Two School Records At Johnson C. Smith Invite

CHARLOTTE – Senior Livia Mahaffie and freshman Hana Metzinger each set new school records in the 5000m run and the javelin throw, respectively, to highlight action for the UNCP women's track and field team at the Johnson C. Smith Invitational over the weekend. 

Mahaffie shattered the school record by six seconds that was first set in 2003 with a time of 18:35.61 for a second place finish, while Metzinger broke the record by nearly one meter that held for eight years as she notched a first place finish in the event with a mark of 35.75m.

Metzinger also competed in the hammer throw for the first time this season and placed fifth with a mark of 28.85m and she placed fourth in the discus throw with a mark of 39.08m. Fellow thrower, Diricka Mitchell snagged a first place finish in the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 42.83m, a ninth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 10.48m and a 10th place finish in the discus with a mark of 29.50m.

Annette Sem and Carrie Blankenship registered top-5 finishes in the 5000m run as Sem notched a third place finish with a time of 19:18.22, while Clankenship ran a time of 20:18.27 for a fifth place finish.

The 4x100m relay team of Icess Booker, Jazmiene Brown, Damita Ford and Taliqua Medley crossed the finish line in eighth place with a time of 49.58 seconds.

Booker and Ford competed in the 100m and 200m dashes, while Jazmiene Brown ran a personal best time of 59.19 seconds in the 400m dash for an 18th place finish. 

Medley posted a 17th place finish (16.65 seconds) in the 100m hurdles, while Shirley Ariwodo finished 28th (21.12 seconds) overall in the event. Airwodo ran a new personal best time in the 400m hurdles for a 21st place finish (1:13.35), while Medley finished 22nd with a time of 1:14.71.

Janay Moore ran a season best time in the 800m dash for a 19th place finish with a time of 2:28.26, while Ashlee Doughy posted a 17th place finish in the 1500m run with a time of 5:17.60.

The women's track and field team will continue competition next weekend when the Lady Braves compete at the Lenoir-Rhyne-hosted NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships in Hickory on Friday and Saturday.
