Braves Soar Above Eagles At FMU Invitational
FLORENCE, S.C. – The UNCP women's volleyball team opened up its 2011 season at the Francis Marion University Invite by using game five to secure the 3-2 victory over Carson-Newman on Friday at the Smith University Complex in Florence, S.C.
The Lady Braves (1-0) quickly pushed ahead of the Eagles (1-1) for a 25-17 score in game one and 25-12 score in game two. The Black and Gold collected 22 kills and only three errors between the two games. Senior Rebecca Morgan tallied seven kills for the Lady Braves in the first two games while newcomer Ashlyn Rebok posted 19 assists.
Carson-Newman took advantage of UNCP's 22 hitting errors and captured games three (20-25) and four (20-25) from the Lady Braves. UNCP entered game five down 3-4 before going on a five point run to pull ahead 8-4 and another rally secured the final game by a 15-8 score.
Newcomer Chelsea Phillips registered a team-best 13 kills and five solo blocks while Morgan collected 10 kills and 17 digs. Sophomore Marissa Baker posted 20 digs while Rebok held a team-high 31 assists.
"In the fifth set, we came out and made some mistakes, but they were a little tight and we were able to finish in the game out," said UNCP head coach Jeff Billington. "We played pretty consistent but we are going to make some changes going into the next game against Erskine."
The Black and Gold will continue action in the second game of the Francis Marion Invitational against Erskine (0-1) at 7 p.m. in Florence, S.C.
