Lady Braves Sweep Broncos, 3-0
PEMBROKE – Freshman Chelsea Phillips put up a team-high 14 kills while the UNCP volleyball team totaled a 58 percent sideout percentage on Thursday evening as the Lady Braves swept Fayetteville State in straight sets in the English E. Jones Center. The scores were 25-16, 25-20 and 25-18.
The Lady Braves (11-12) finished game one on a 7-2 roll as the Black and Gold captured a 64 percent sideout percentages while holding the Broncos (15-10) to a 41 percent sideout percentage. Game two, brought about one tie score and one lead change as the margin of victory was narrowed to five points. Senior Rebecca Morgan slammed down a kill to send the Black and Gold into game three, which Phillips ended on a speeding kill to the floor to end the game, 3-0.
Phillips tallied 22 attack attempts, posted a .500 hitting percentage, totaled nine digs and registered the squad's only block solo. Morgan totaled double-digit kills with 10 along with one block assist. Libero Marissa Baker led the team with 14 digs while Ashlyn Rebok dished out 33 assists. Freshman Hannah Hill posted an evening-best six services aces.
UNCP outhit Fayetteville State with a total .165 hitting percentage compared to a .069 percentage. The Black and Gold wrapped up the game with 39 kills, 50 digs and 10 services aces, while the Broncos were held to a mere 20 kills and 45 digs, but managed to seize seven team blocks.
"We avenged a loss since losing in Fayetteville earlier in the season, and we played better and more consistent," said UNCP head coach Jeff Billington. "Our freshmen are getting better every day and I am pleased with their performance."
The Lady Braves will return to action in the English E. Jones Center on Wednesday as UNCP hosts undefeated Peach Belt Conference opponent Armstrong Atlantic (21-0, 7-0).
